Surgery Day

I didn't sleep at all last night! I woke Jonathan up at 3:45... I got him dressed and then we were off for Children's Hospital by 4am. My sister, Kim, went down to the hospital with me. We arrived shortly after 5am... we were early, but I never know what ATL traffic is going to be like!
We checked in and started what seemed to be a long wait. Jonathan was a good boy, he colored, put puzzles together and before we knew it they were calling his name. My sis and I walked back with him and they very quickly prep him for surgery! The Dr's came in to talk to me before surgery and Jonathan asked to have his pic made with each of them (he already knows the importance of scrap booking each life event). They gave him the loopy meds and within 5 mins he was doing a one man comedian show in room 143! LOL! I was holding him in my arms and one of the nurses bent over me to check his armband and he said "hey lady, what's that on your head?" I cracked up!... She was wearing one of those surgical hair nets! He is such a funny boy! Just a few seconds later he was OUT! I had to put him on the stretcher and say goodbye... I am so happy that he was asleep before they took him from me! The OR nurse called me every hour for an update. Here's how things went:
It took 1 hour to prep his back once they had him in the OR, then 4 hours of surgery, then 30 mins in recovery. They took me and my sister to the room he will be in to wait for him. As soon as he woke up in recovery they gave him a shot of morphine and then they brought him to me. He was on a stretcher, so they had to roll him over onto the bed in his room... OH MY GOODNESS, that was awful! He was already in so much pain, but then they had to pick him up and move him. Bless his heart, I have never seen him in so much pain. The next few hours he would drift in and out of sleep. When he was awake he was screaming in pain. He has managed to drink a few sips of juice and a couple bits of jello, but then he vomited. He IV busted and made a mess on his sheets so the nurses tried to change his bedding, which caused tremendous pain. Basically, anytime he moves his body he has stabbing pain in his back. He can only lay down... no sitting up, he can be rolled from one side to the other, but he needs to be as still as possible. He will have a catheter until the Dr clears him to get up out of bed.

My sis went home earlier this afternoon, so right now it is just me and Jon-Jon down here. I will continue to update everyone as much as possible. We are in room 139. Direct phone # 404-785-4139.

I will leave you with a sweet quote from Jonathan: He was crying in pain, so I was holding his little hand and I asked if there was anything I could do for him... He said "Just... Keep... Me... Company" Gotta love him! :)
Keep up the prayers!

Oh what a sweet little boy! You all are in our thoughts. Surgery is such a scary thing to go through especially with a child. Hang in there! :)

There must be an ancient soul living in that kid’s little body. Maybe Plato or Aristotle or somebody like that. I wish I was there to keep him (and you) company. Glad you have computer access.

Love Ya'll,

That last line paragraph touched me so deeply. What a brave (and funny) little boy you have. I'm so grateful that he's done with surgery, so hopefully now he can heal quickly. Thank you for updating your post—I'm sure if I were in your situation I would barely remember to go to the bathroom let alone post a blog.

I'm going to call today to see how Jon-Jon is doing. Hang in there mama. We're thinking of you.

I have been following your blog for a while, I came across it through another blog. We adopted our son Cole from Shymkent KZ in Aug. 05. We live in CA. Wishing Jonathon a speedy and pain free recovery. Thanks for keeping us updated on his condition.
